Present is a flexible noun, verb, adjective, idiom with several key meanings.

A present is of course a gift you give to someone. Something of perceived or actual value like.a birthday present.

Present means to show yourself or something in front of others.. Soldiers with their guns present arms. Young ladies were presented to society at coming out balls, The finance director presents the financial results to the Board.

Present is now, the current time. At the present time. Present tense in grammar. He is the present CEO of the company.

The word originates from the Latin prae, before & esse, to be & later praesent which means to to be in front of others, in charge. A president.
