Rule of 3
Here’s a short clip to watch of my 3 fave things. The great presenter Steve Jobs, the great presentation tool iPhone (& iPad) & the great presentation secret, the rule of 3; there’s 3 new devices & Steve repeats them 3 times. But there’s even more. Here’s 3 more lessons to learn.

No company name
They know you
You can see that there is no mention of the name of the company on any of the slides. The word Apppe doesn’t appear anywhere. Normally when you see presentations, a large portion of each slide is taken up with the company name, the logo & possibly other information like website.

Logo
In this presentation there is a slide with the famous logo. It’s not in a top or a bottom corner, it’s a beautiful full screen image. You can do this too. The audienxe should already know who you are. If not, explain who you are with a full screen logo then no need to show again.

Clean slides
You will then have cleaner slides. No logos, or small unreadable text in corners to distract the audience attention. Instead they can focus on your large, simple message. For slide background, Apple uses black for a darkened theatre. You can use white for a daylight presentation.

Stand on the left
Stand
Steve Jobs stands up, in front of the audience. Others have followers his lead in recent years, but a lot don’t & still sit or stand behind lecterns. Give up the props & get out in front to have a better relationship with the audience. This requires more preparation & practice.

On the left
You can see that Steve spends most of the time standing to the audience left of the screen (which is right in the middle of the stage). This makes it easier for the audience as we tend to look from left to right, so watching him speak then looking at the screen is more natural.

Move to centre
He then moves to the centre of the stage when something very significant appears on the screen, like the new iPhone. This makes the words appear above his head, signifying the great achievement. He then walk back away to the left to reveal & allow the audience to see the full screen.

Slides
Simple
Then there’s the content of the slides themselves. They are so simple, don’t you think? One message on each slide, large, full screen photos with no borders & large, bold, uniform text. As the audience you don’t need to spend lots of time looking at them to understand the meaning.

Spoken words
When there is longer text on the slides, it remains large & easy to read. It also follows the spoken words & both are catchy, easy to remember phrases. This is only possible when you wrote a presentation script before you made the slides & practice it. All part of the 7 Steps.

Movement
The slides also have movement. Movement is a great way to attract audience attention. I’m sure you know often your audience can be distracted with other things. Movement will help to keep them focused. Not too much, but here there’s simple movement in transition & on the slides.

Humor
In classic Steve Jobs style, there’s also 1 more thing to learn here. At the end there’s another great presentation secret, humor. Add a little humor to win over your audience. The more you prepare your presentation, the easier it will be to find something humorous to present.

Which secret will you use in your next presentation?
