First appearences
A presentation is often the first impression someone gets of your business & company, but does that mean it needs to have a specific corporate look? & should there be only a few people who are allowed to present your business or company to the outside world. Many would probably answer yes.

It’s not who
Happiest
But one of the most successful companies in the world does it differently. You might not know Zappos, but it’s a famous consumer company in the US. They sell shoes online & are famous for customer service. Zappos was acquired for $1.2bn by Amazon in 2009 & is also known for its happiness.

Culture
The happiness & service comes from a carefully built culture which founder Tony Hsieh describes in his excellent book, Delivering Happiness. The first step is how they select people, it’s very careful. The second is when new people join, they have their own university to teach the culture.

Anyone presents
Because the culture is so strong & because they go to great lengths to make sure they have the right people & those people get taught everything about the company... anyone is allowed to present anything about Zappos to any audience, without checking with anyone else. & in any style.

It’s your point
Content
The most important thing about a presentation is not that it has your company logo on it. Or that it has been prepared using the same company style that all the other presentations have. It’s does’nt need to be given by the company spokesperson. What’s important is the content.
Have a point
The content is not for your presentation, it’s for your audience & the most important part of the content is the point. What do you want to say & more importantly what do you want your audience to do afterwards. You often see slides with lots on them & wonder ‘what is that trying to say. ‘

Work backwards
That’s why 7 Steps To Giving A Great Presentation works backwards. Step 1 is look at the type of event, what kind of audience & make a quick calendar to plan to get there. 2 is deciding what you want to ask your audience to do when you get there. Then you make the presentation .

& your audience
Simple
What should your presentation look like? As many from Warren Buffet to Steve Jobs say...keep it simple. You don’t see the sophistication of an iPhone from the outside, you see the beauty of simplicity. You do all the sophistication behind the scenes so your audience sees simple slides.

Plain
Beauty comes in a plain package, mono color background, no logos, no company name. If your audience doesn’t know who you are, you have other issues than a presentation. Plain & simple are great for your audience because they make it easier for them to listen & look at the same time.

Fun
Don’t forget to have Soen fun. The way to have fun is to have practiced a lot. So no matter how nervous you are, you will seem like a natural. When you’ve practiced, you can also start to enjoy yourself & really entertain your audience. If it’s a show, they’ll get excited & take action.

Will you do this?
Next time you have to make a presentation, work out the point first & make sure each slide has its own point. Next time one of your people gets asked to do a presentation, discuss it with them, then let them do it. To help them, get them into the 7 Steps first. Will you?
