3 of everything
As you know well by now, I like the number 3. The rule of 3, 3 everything. So when you think of what type of presentation you want to give, I suggest you chose out of this list of 3 types. Yes there are probably many others, but I like to keep it simple. In truth I’ve never used anything other than one of these 3.
Story
Find
The first type is a story presentation, telling you or your company story to your audience. This is the type of presentation companies present to their customers or investors. The key is to get your story. To do this ask yourself lots of why questions, why this industry, why our company, why will 2019 be great. You’ll be amazed what you come up with.
Simple
Keep it simple by breaking your story into easy to undershot sections like the history, key people, your business model, recent results, future outlook. A few slides to explain each section & full screen photos to show the audience into your world. Take your own or use your staff. Simple data, charts & tables.
Title tell
One way to also tell the story is in the slide tiles. Give each slide a short catchy 3-5 word title that spells out the story like; we started with nothing, team has decades of experience, we’re number one for quality, last year we doubled & this year we’ll double again! Sound good?
List
Music & Steps
The second type of presentation you can use is a list. This can work well in many occasions. I’ve used it at large & small events, presentations & speeches. Lists are commonly used for example top 40 music or 7 Steps To Giving A Great Presentation. A list helps to keep things simple & easy to remember & you can easily stop & restart.

Pick a number
For a list presentation, you need to pick a number. You can pick a number to match the amount of time you have to talk; you can do list presentations based on the year like 12 for 2012. I usually use an odd number for a list, but 10 is a very widely used list number by many people & I’ve used that several times too,
Countdown
With a list presentation you can also keep to a story format by finding numbers which match up to tell your story & help to make it more memorable. You can also use it to create tension by ranking the list in importance & creating tension as you build up to the main point last. Or the points can be totally separate, each one standing on its own.
3x3
Most used
The third type of presentation I like to call a 3x3 presentation. This is what I use most of the time now for speeches, presentations & any writings I do. This blog is written using the 3x3 format. It keeps everything short, simple & hopefully therefore impactful & easy to remember.
3 things
The format is to work out what you want to say, what the core theme is, then divide the theme up into 3 main topics. In the case of this week’s blog, the theme is the different types of presentations & so the 3 main topics are the 3 types of presentation. Then you add 3 sub points for each of the 3 main topics.
1 more thing
The 3x3 ends with 1 more thing. You can try to make this surprising, something you’re audience hasn’t heard before, something so big it’s memorable & something factual like a key number. I usually do this with our share price, like showing how to use what I presented to value our company 10X more than it currently is. Then the action is obvious.
Three things to include
Lastly there’s 3 things which I always include in my presentation. & you can too. First is a photo, remember always make your photo full screen. Then I always include a video. Make your video short, 1 min or less & like the photo, make it yourself. Then always give a way for your audience to keep in touch, email, website sign up or social media @.
Be a great presenter!
