Russel @ 10X
I was just listening to Russel Brunson’s podcast, The highest paid presenter ever earned $3m in 90 mins at the 2018 10X Growth Conference. He just presented at the 2019 event & everything went wrong. The things which went wrong were, the sound, the timing & the media. Here’s how to give some protection from those same things happening to you.
What went wrong
Sound
First here’s what went wrong for Russe in more detail. First, the 10X growth con took place in a stadium with over 30,000 people! The stadium was old & the way the sound system was set up, there was an enormous echo & so the audience couldn’t hear the speakers. This was a special problem for Russel because he speaks fast.
Time
The second issue was time. The 10X event had a number of speakers & a huge audience. That combined to mean that the timing was slow. The speakers went over time, the audience was late & by the time Russel spoke he didn’t have the amount of time he was supposed to, he had to cut his presentation short.
Media
The third issue was with the media Russel was using. To make his point, like any good ‘7 Stepper’, Russel uses photos & video in his fantastic selling presentations. The videos he uses are powerful testimonials from real people who use his product. But in the open stadium daylight the videos couldn’t be seen or heard.
How to adjust
Simple
Although the conditions at this specific event were hard for anyone to overcome, here’s how you can protect yourself against these issues happening in most cases. First & above all keep it simple. The core idea behind the ‘7 Steps’ is to help you make a simple, easy to follow, easy to understand presentation. Simple helps protect against all issues.

The core idea behind the ‘7 Steps’ is to help you make a simple, easy to follow, easy to understand presentation. Simple helps protect against all issues.
Timing
Here’s how to adjust timing if you need. ‘7 Steps’ is a numbers game & gets you writing a script based on theme, topics & sub topic tweets. 3 topics (+ Into & end) = 11 tweets, 660 words, 7 to 10 minutes. For a longer time expand the theme into another layer, 1-7 sections. If you need to shorten quickly, cut the sections back down again.
Media
In the 7 Steps, you make your own media, photos & videos. To make sure they work as well as possible, make your photos simple composition & full screen on your slide so they can be easily seen. Make the videos simple & short at less than 1 minute so they are easy for your audience to see & watch.
Murphy’s
Practice
In his podcast, Russel says that whatever could go wrong did. This is Murphy’s law. To help offset this, first make sure you practice, practice, practice so that you are confident & don’t get put off by small things. Practice in front of a mirror, practice with friends & record yourself presenting. Always iterate with feedback to make it better.
Prepare
Prepare. Make sure you have everything you need with you when you go to the event. Bring your presentation device, power & a remote control. Turn up early with plenty of time before. Check out all the equipment & have a practice run through. Test sound & see how your slides, pics & video look. Change colors & backgrounds if you need to make it easier to see.
Keep going
A stadium is a bit different, but in most situations, having used the ‘7 Steps’ will help you keep going if everything goes wrong. If the projector or sound fail or you are asked to cut the timing short, your presentation will be already short or adjustable, you’ll have a script which stands by itself without slides or media & a confident practiced voice which needs no amplification.
Simple always wins
Most of all, ‘7 Steps’ is designed to simplify. A simple theme, simple script, simple data, simple charts, media & slides. This will be the most important thing to save the day if Murphy’s law kicks in. At the 10X GC, Russel cut down his slides, had his users come on stage live & spoke slowly. He still sold $2.7m in his 90 minutes. We can all try to too.
Be a great presenter!
